The AVMA opposes ear cropping and tail docking of dogs when done solely for cosmetic purposes The AVMA encourages the elimination of ear cropping and tail docking from breed standards.
Very disappointing. This group, the American Veterinary Medical Association, has worked with the AKC on topics like this one for years. They have now put out this notice without discussion with the AKC- Seems the AKC was kind of blindsided. _________________________ Nikki Agrippina Mastino
I don't really see the issue with cropping, and I say this as someone who OWNS a dock/crop breed who is au naturale. . . I kept her the way she was because I didn't trust the vets here to not completely botch the surgery, not because I'm super sentimental about the tip of her tail.
But you know, we now live in a world where chickens in California mean more to our government that a gay couples right to marry so, what do any of us really know about political logic??

Yes, the American Veterinary Medical Association adopted the following oath in 1969:
"Being admitted to the profession of veterinary medicine,
I solemnly swear to use my scientific knowledge and skills for the benefit of society through the protection of animal health, the relief of animal suffering, the conservation of livestock resources, the promotion of public health, and the advancement of medical knowledge.
I will practice my profession conscientiously, with dignity, and in keeping with the principles of veterinary medical ethics.
I accept as a lifelong obligation the continual improvement of my professional knowledge and competence."
Maybe it is because many vets have no clue how to do this dieing art. Now it gives them an excuse to be ignorant of these procedures. Joe Attaway Mastini Del Pescatore

The AVMA, an organization to which I belong, has had that position for some time now. AAHA's position is similar and they do not allow ear cropping at any AAHA accredited hospital.
I took the veterinary oath and take it very seriously but I decided to crop, and I cropped half of my recent litter.
I though about why for a long time and came up with this position statement: "I did not take my decision to crop ears lightly. Having been raised in the West Coast of the United States, a hotbed for animal rights, and having studied in the United Kingdom, the birthplace of animal rights, I have been more then exposed to the other viewpoints concerning cosmetic surgery in animals. During veterinary school many of my classmates quickly decided against the procedure, siding with many other graduating 21st century veterinarians. Many of my veterinary colleges state that: the dogs are in pain from the cropping procedure, they miss their ears, or that ear cropping is not medically indicated. I hesitated to condemn the practice. After great consideration I have decided to crop the ears of some of my Neapolitan Mastiff puppies because I feel that when done correctly the procedure is safe and I want to maintain the historic look of the Neapolitan Mastiff..." Now the USA dogs wil start to resemble the mother country since its not allowed there either. Not even for a puppy being shipped outside to USA were cropping is still allowed. UGM Admin undergroundmastini
