Problem: Dog with natural ears is prone to wax and “gunk” build-up. She occasionally gets ear infections because of this (last one was April 2009, so not too serious.)

Any advice as to cleaning? Such as, good cleaning solutions to use? Are there any recommended anti-bacterial or anti-septic ear washes? Where can one find bulk cotton wadding? I have searched everywhere. In the past, I got some stuff from my vet but I would like to find something off-the-shelf to use, if it exists.

Brian,
Hi...
Recent trip to the vet with Rudy, (my diabetic baby, at 18 months old), and of course, we always worry about infections in diabetics.

So, the ears cropped up(LOL), and he checked out Rudy's ears, and recommended we use the ear wash they had at our vet, (I'm at work, at lunch, can put it up later), and use cotton balls.

The solution was 13 dollars, (I think), for a 12 oz bottle, and it will last a long time. Cotton balls are very cheap.

Also, if you use dilute ACV, (apple cider vinegar), the natural brown stuff. You dilute it, I believe. And use it... I think there is a post here, in the archives you can access...

good luck! Let us know!!!

Anne

I'm glad this came up! I have the same problem with Big Boy Blue. My vet said that some dogs just have a lot of build up and BBB is one of them. No infections yet and BBB isn't bothered. I just noticed all the gunk and thought WHAT?? My vet says clean them or not - see how it goes - don't worry about it until there's something to worry about.

I bought some ear wash at dr foster and smith that works ok. It's about 6$. Squirt in in the ears, and try to squish it around. When he shakes his head wax comes out far enough to get it with a cotton make-up removal type pads. I've tried the premade ear wipe pads too, but you can't get in far enough to get out the really good gunk.

I use white vinegar diluted with water 50/50 and cotton balls. I just use the vinegar solution like the regular ear washes.

My bitch gets yeast infections in her ears sometimes.
Vet gave me some stuff that works.
Also if ya put cotton balls in her ears when ya bath her and dry out her ears when they get wet it helps alot.
The apple sider vinigar sounds good and I would though some witchhazel in to the applesider mixture, even teatree, dilute it though.
As someone who loves natural stuff I have to say that on this particular topic I got to go with the stuff my vet gave me.
It is really good but not natural. I through a few drops in if her ears get damp and she has been almost free of problems for over a year.
'Canaural' the bottle I got over a year ago still has a 1/4 left.
Good luck.

Yes, that is usually my problem--yeast infections. I wanted to avoid the vet, but maybe that is not practical. Seems Apple Cider Vinegar is the windex of the neo world. Thanks all for the advice.

Mouth wash works well also . Clean the ear with cotton swabs , then fulsh the ear with a syringe & 30cc per ear of mouth wash .....Do this every day for 2wks . Then twice a month from there on out ....
