My neighbor has just had their first litter. Unplanned, uneducated, ect, ect, ect. My question is.. the mom is really really skinny. She basically starved herself during the last couple of weeks before the birth. She has a long birthing process. From 9pm at night until about 5pm the next day or longer. She will not have anything to do with her litter other than try to eat them. So right now they have the puppies inside on a heating pad in a laundry basket and the mom is outside. (with no attention I might add.it's a very sad sight.) Anyway. The mom had a large litter and half of them have died. I'm worried about the mom. I am going over there everyday to help out. Someone had suggested Calsorb for the mom. How do we know how much to give. They have been in contact with a vet via phone because they cannot afford to take them in. However, they have not talked to the vet at all about mom. I am worried about the health of mom at this point. She isn't receiving any love or attention. She's basically banned to the back yard to get over it herself. Granted that is where she normally stays before she got pregnant, but I am still not "sold" that that is the right thing to do with her at this point. Is there something that we should be doing (besides taking her to the vet.. I already know that one! But I cannot force them.)? Please if anyone has any suggestions without snide or negative remarks?? You would be preaching to the choir here.
If the dog has been kept continually in the back yard it is not surprising that she won't accept her pups if they have taken them inside. Basically she needs some TLC and some good nutrition. Can you give her some food yourself?. Try her on some nice tasty chicken with some yoghurt and add some glucodin - will give her some energy and increase the appetite. Check her also to make sure she hasn't developed mastitis - that can cause lack of appetite and no interest in puppies. Hope all goes well for the ppor girl.

Thank you for the advice. I told them about maybe being calcium deficient also. Sadly, they had to put the rest of the puppies down last night. They weren't holding a temperature. The emergency vet said they had some virus. They told me what it was, but it was long. It's a kennel virus that kennel bred dogs get. They are thinking the Beagle gave it to puppies and mom. The emergency vet wants the mom and the Beagle to come in on Monday since it is a weekend to get them tested and vaccinated against it. Mom, however, was much more alert and at the door when I just went over there a minute ago. She is wagging her tail which is a good sign that she's ready to eat again. I plan on going over there for the next couple of days to love on the poor girl. She is still deathly skinny by looking at her. She's too sweet of a dog to be treated the way they do.
